Censorship and Music Therapy Self study CMTE
4 credits (3 ethics credits) open from 12/1/2023-12/2/2025
How do we decide when to censor in music therapy sessions? How do we minimize harm and increase safety? How do oppressive systems and countertransference impact these decisions? How do we advocate for change around censorship where we work? This 4 credit, self-study CMTE explores these questions and offers frameworks to support decision making and change. Participants will receive a video, PowerPoint, and self study worksheets. The course is open to creative arts therapists and students. (This course is similar to “Exploring Censorship and Music Therapy” and is not recommended for those who have taken that course)
Use of Garageband in Music Therapy:
4 credit CMTE self study open through 11/15/25
Learn the basics of garageband on Macbook and how to apply them to clinical practice.
This 4 credit self-study provides step by step instructions for recording, mixing, editing, and looping in garageband on MacBook. Clinical applications will be described and demonstrated. Participants will receive a 3-hour video and PDF's detailing garageband functions and clinical applications. (Demonstrations are shown on macOS high seirra 10.13.6) This is a beginner's course for garageband on MacBook. Music experiences can be applied to garagband on iPad or other looping and recording software, but the practical functions of how to facilitate them through those programs are not taught in this course.
Creating Music for Stress Management:
4 credit CMTE self study open through 09/03/25
Explore ways to create and co-create music to support relaxation and stress reduction.
This 4 credit, asynchronous CMTE explores how to create music to support traditional stress management exercises and how to facilitate music making and songwriting as stress reducing processes for clients to engage in. Participants will learn about using trauma informed language along with supportive chord progressions and musical techniques to support and empower clients as they decrease their stress. Participants will have unlimited access to the 3 hour video, a song writing template, and a detailed course schedule that includes written formulas for stress management exercises and groups, chord progressions, and musical techniques.
Spontaneous Songwriting in Mental Health:
2 credit CMTE self study open through 1/26/25
Learn how to write songs from scratch in a variety of ways. This course will prepare music therapists to facilitate songwriting with confidence, freedom, and collaboration.
Music therapists often report feeling nervous or unsure about bringing songwriting into their practices. This 2 credit asynchronous CMTE explores how to facilitate songwriting from scratch, within a strengths-based approach, during in person and virtual mental health treatment. Participants will receive access to a video and to printable handouts detailing how to initiate songwriting in the moment, a step by step song writing process, choosing topics and lyrical themes, chord progressions, and creating music with instruments and with garageband.

Grievance Policy for CMTE’s
Participants who wish to submit a grievance may do so for up to 90 days after registering for an opportunity via email to Audrey Hausig, MMT, MT-BC at philadelphiamusictherapy@gmail.com. A written response will be submitted within 5 days upon receipt of the email. Participants hold the right to have a grievance addressed by the Continuing Education Committee of CBMT in the event that the Approved Provider's Grievance Procedure is exhausted should the grievance be unresolved.

Ethics of Cultural Humility in Therapeutic Spaces with Individuals Who Have Experienced Trauma

Join us for Relaxation through Music (Age 18+)
Music School board-certified music therapist Audrey Hausig leads a virtual informal relaxation group for the entire community. We'll check our stress levels and work on them through deep breathing, guided imagery, and muscle work, while Audrey supports us with relaxing and soothing improvised music. You can sing along or you can just listen and relax. No musical (or meditation) experience necessary! Group is limited to 10 people per session. Cost is $10 per participant; $5 for essential workers. August 25, 2019: Confronting Clinician’s Feelings of Inadequacy through Musical Exploration
Philadelphia Music Therapy will be running music experiments for kids of all ages as well as sharing about music therapy and careers in music therapy on behalf of the American Music Therapy Association at The Franklin Institute Community Night on Monday May 20th from 5:00-8:00pm. Admission is free!
